Calgary leads U SPORTS with 19 Dinos on CFL rosters

The Calgary Dinos once again lead all of U SPORTS in representation as the Canadian Football League (CFL) gets underway this week.

This season, a total of 19 former Dinos have made team rosters across the nine CFL organizations heading into opening week – by far the most not only in Canada West, but all of U SPORTS, which is the national governing body of university sport in Canada.

Calgary’s season opener included seven former Dinos, as Sukh Chungh and Tyler Packer return to McMahon Stadium with the B.C. Lions to take on Ryan SceviourSean McEwenNick StatzCharlie Moore and Jalen Philpot of the Stampeders.

This weekend, Richie Sindani will make his debut with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as they make the trip to Winnipeg to face the Blue Bombers.

In addition, Tanner Doll of Ottawa is going up against Jeshrun AntwiJake Harty and Tyson Philpot of Montreal.

Sunday’s opening-weekend finale will see Micah Teitz and Logan Bandy of Saskatchewan travel to Edmonton to take on Adam KonarJ-Min Pelley and Jacob Plamondon.

The final two Dinos will have to wait until week two to kick off their 2023 seasons with the defending champion Toronto Argonauts, as Darius Ciraco and Peter Nicastro are under contract with the Argos this season. The Argonauts have a bye week to start the season.

Heading into week one, a total of 205 players from U SPORTS institutions were listed on CFL rosters, with the 19 Dinos by far being the most from a single university. Laval and Montreal each have 16 former players listed, while Saskatchewan is the next highest from Canada West with 11.

Calgary leading the way in CFL representation should come as no surprise, as the Dinos have had at least one player selected in the CFL Draft for the past 22 consecutive seasons. Furthermore, Calgary has had 65 CFL draft-day selections since 2008 – the most of any school in the last 15 years.

The 59th season of Dinos football will open training camp in August ahead of their season opener Sept. 1st at McMahon Stadium against the Alberta Golden Bears.
