Legends of the Fall: Top Five Sports Events in Calgary This Month

Fall is here and with it, plenty of sports activity in Calgary.

So, if you’re looking for some great action to check out, grab a pumpkin spice latte and check out these events.

Here’s a top five to-do list on the October sports calendar:

  1. FLAMES … The Flames open their 2024-25 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season schedule on the road in Vancouver with an Oct. 9th matchup against the Canucks. Their home opener at Scotiabank Saddledome follows on Oct. 12th when the Philadelphia Flyers pay them a visit. The first Battle of Alberta between the Flames and Oilers takes place in Edmonton on Oct. 13th. More Flames home games follow on Oct. 15th (vs. Chicago Black Hawks); Oct. 22nd (vs. Pittsburgh Penguins); Oct. 24th (vs. Carolina Hurricanes); and on Oct. 26th against the Winnipeg Jets.
  1. CAVALRY … The Cavalry Football Club wrap up their Canadian Premier League (CPL) regular season schedule with three matches, including two road games (Oct. 5th and Oct. 19th) and a home contest against the Halifax Wanderers on Oct. 12th at ATCO Field. That home game is also fan appreciation night. The 2024 CPL playoffs will run from Oct. 23rd through Nov. 10th.
  1. STAMPEDERS … Canadian Football League (CFL) action for the Stampeders includes four matchups in October. The Stamps visit the Lions in Vancouver on Oct. 4th before welcoming the Edmonton Elks for a Battle of Alberta at McMahon Stadium on Oct. 12th. Calgary closes out the regular season with an Oct. 18th game in Hamilton versus the Tiger-Cats, followed by another road visit to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Oct. 26th. CFL playoff action takes place in November, with the 111th Grey Cup set for Nov. 17th in Vancouver.
  1. PUCK WATCHING … In addition to NHL action, the Western Hockey League (WHL), American Hockey League (AHL) and Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) all hit the ice in October. The Calgary Hitmen have a half dozen home games: Oct. 2nd vs. Saskatoon Blades; Oct. 6th vs. Vancouver Giants; Oct. 14th vs. Prince George Cougars; Oct. 16th vs. Red Deer Rebels; Oct. 19th vs. Lethbridge Hurricanes and Oct. 30th vs. Medicine Hat Tigers.

    The home opener for the Calgary Wranglers takes place on Oct. 11th when the Abbotsford Canucks visits the Saddledome. The two teams do battle again on Oct. 13th in Calgary. The Wranglers then hit the road and return home for matchups against the Colorado Eagles on Oct. 25th and Oct. 27th. They close out the month with Oct. 29th and Oct. 31st home contests against the San Diego Gulls.

    Meanwhile, the Calgary Canucks have six home games in October at Ken Bracko Arena. They welcome Camrose on Oct. 1st, Grande Prairie on Oct. 10th, Fort McMurray on Oct. 12th, Whitecourt on Oct. 16th, Drayton Valley on Oct. 28th and Lloydminster on Oct. 29th.
  1. CAMPUS COMPETITION … College athletics are also in full swing. Basketball, soccer, hockey, volleyball, field hockey, rugby, wrestling, swimming and football action featuring Mount Royal University, the University of Calgary, SAIT or St. Mary’s University teams is on full display.
