Cavalry Look to Claim First Championship on Home Turf

Calgary’s professional soccer team, the Cavalry Football Club, are looking to make franchise history.

The Cavalry will host Hamilton’s Forge Football Club (FC) at ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9th with the Canadian Premier League (CPL) championship on the line.

“It’s huge for the city to host a final,” Cavalry midfielder Shamit Shome told the Western Wheel newspaper.

“We had a chance to do it last year and we lost that chance … this is our redemption, to host this home final for the fans.”

The Cavs finished second in the 2019 and 2023 championship finals and won the CPL Shield, which is awarded to the best regular-season club, those same two years.

This marks the third time the Cavalry and Forge have met in the CPL final, with the Forge coming out victorious and lifting the North Star Cup during the previous meetings. The Forge won the 2024 CPL Shield and the Cavalry finished in second place during the regular season.

Both squads have also qualified for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup. This is the second time the Cavalry have qualified for the prestigious tournament, which features the top soccer teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The Cavalry’s opponent will be revealed during the Concacaf Champions Cup draw on Dec. 10th.

Several members of the Cavalry are also up for a number of annual CPL Awards, which will be handed out on Thursday, Nov. 7th at Mount Royal University’s Bella Concert Hall.

Daan Klomp has been nominated for the Defender of the Year award.

Klomp has also been named a finalist for the 2024 CPL Players’ Player of the Year award, alongside his Cavalry teammates Ali Musse and Tobias Warschewski. There are 10 finalists for the player-selected honour.

Meanwhile, Cavalry FC Head Coach and General Manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr. has been nominated for the Coach of the Year award. He won the award in 2024 and this is his fourth time being selected as a finalist.

The Nov. 9th CPL Final will be broadcast on One Soccer, CBC, CBC Gem and cbcsports.ca.
