Cavalry Claim CPL Shield

Calgary’s Cavalry Football Club has captured the Canadian Premier League (CPL) Shield as the best team in the regular season.

The Cavalry secured the title with a 1-0 triumph over Vancouver FC at ATCO Field on Oct. 25th.

That result gave Calgary’s professional soccer club a record of 18 wins, four losses and six draws over the course of their 28 matches, enough to finish two points clear of Hamilton’s Forge FC. The Cavalry also finished with the top goal differential in the CPL, outscoring their opponents by a total of 35 goals over the course of the year.

It was a record-breaking season for the Cavalry, who set a single-season high for goals scored, with 58, and established a new record for home points (36) after going undefeated at ATCO Field in 2026.

Tobias Warschewski – the Scott-Mamini Memorial Award winner as the Calgary Booster Club’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2024 – set a record for most assists in a CPL season, with 10, and became the first player to register double digits in both goals (11) and assists.

Cavalary goalkeeper Nathan Ingham lead the league with 11 clean sheets and his 61 saves were the second most in the CPL.

“The league table never lies,” said Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

“We’ve been the best team over the course of the regular season, and we deserve to be the one that gets to lift the Shield and claim it back.”

This is the third Shield for the Cavalry in franchise history. The club now looks to become the first team to win both the CPL Shield and the North Star Cup – awarded to the playoff champions – in the same year.

“It’s probably the best group of players I’ve had in the eight seasons I’ve been at this football club,” Wheeldon Jr. told reporters. “Because they can win in different ways.”

The Cavalry will now set their sights on a two-game semifinal matchup against FC Supra du Quebec, who qualified for the playoffs in their inaugural season.

The first leg takes place in Laval, Quebec on Nov. 1st, followed by the second game on Nov. 7th at ATCO Field in Spruce Meadows.

In four matches against FC Supra du Quebec, the Cavalry won three and tied the other.

Meanwhile, with the Shield win, the Cavalry FC have secured an automatic berth in the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
