The Canadian women’s rugby team captivated the nation’s attention on the way to the World Cup final and received key contributions from Calgary-connected athletes along the way.
After eliminating the defending champion New Zealand squad in the semifinals, Canada made its first trip to the World Cup final in 11 years. The Canadians took on England in front of 81,885 fans – the largest crowd in women’s rugby history – on Sept. 27th at Allianz Stadium in Twickenham. England won 33-13 to secure their 33rd victory in a row and first title since 2014 – the English beat the Canadians that year, as well.
Despite the loss, Canada confirmed its No. 2 ranking and turned heads at the World Cup. The victory over New Zealand will go down as a memorable win in Canadian rugby history.
“It’s amazing, from a Canadian perspective, the support we’ve gained and the view on rugby that it has brought. We’ve inspired a few people along the way, even if they’re not Canadian,” said DaLeaka Menin, a product of Vulcan, Alberta and University of Calgary alumni.
“We are trying to create a type of rugby that’s a little bit different than some other teams and countries play, and that’s exciting,” added Menin, who plays for the Calgary Hornets when she’s not wearing the maple leaf, in an interview with RugbyPass.
“Hopefully, this is only the start of that journey, and we’ve at least earned a place as a team that deserves the respect. We are here at the forefront of rugby, not sitting behind.”
Menin’s teammate, Emily Tuttosi, is another University of Calgary alum and Hornets player who represented Canada in the championship final.
Courtney O’Donnell of Rimbey, Alberta plays for the Red Deer Titans, and Calgary product Gillian Boag is a finisher on the Canadian roster. Former Dino rugby player Julia Omokhuale also represented Canada at the tournament.
Canada now looks ahead to the next World Cup tournament in Australia in 2029.
