If Not Hockey, What? Lanny McDonald Reveals His Other Sport

What do you ask a Hockey Hall of Famer, Stanley Cup champion, and Calgary icon who has done it all in hockey? You ask him what he would have done instead.

In our newest video series, the Calgary Booster Club sits down with some of Canada’s greatest athletes to ask one simple but fascinating question: If you couldn’t play your sport, what sport would you pick?

Our first guest is none other than Lanny McDonald — the man with the most famous moustache in hockey history. Over a 16-year NHL career, Lanny scored 500 goals, recorded over 1,000 points, co-captained the Calgary Flames to their first and only Stanley Cup championship in 1989, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. He is without question one of the most beloved figures in Calgary sports history.

But what if hockey had never been in the picture?

Watch the short clip above to hear Lanny’s answer — it might just surprise you.

This is the first installment of our ongoing series where the Calgary Booster Club chats with elite athletes about the sports road not taken. Stay tuned for upcoming episodes featuring Olympic speed skaters, figure skaters, and more.
