Sunshine, green grass and sports.
That’s the stuff of summer and Calgarians have plenty to get excited about in the months ahead.
Here is a quick look at some of the sporting events that people in Cowtown can look forward to:
1. FOOTBALL
It’s a big year for football in Calgary with the Stampeders hosting the 113th annual Grey Cup at McMahon Stadium on Nov. 15th. Preseason action in the Canadian Football League is underway, and the Stamps host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on June 5th for the first week of the regular season. The Stampeders last game of the season is a home date against the B.C. Lions on October 17th and then they’ll battle it out in the playoffs in the hopes of securing a spot in the Grey Cup.
2. SOCCER
The Cavalry Football Club (FC) season began in April and it will run through October with games at Calgary’s ATCO Field in Spruce Meadows. The Cavalry won the Canadian Premier League championship in 2024 and will pursue another title this season.
At McMahon Stadium, the Calgary Wild FC will compete for professional women’s soccer supremacy in the Northern Super League. Games for the Wild are underway and will also continue until the end of August.
3. BASEBALL
The Western Canadian Baseball League celebrates its Opening Day on May 28th with summer collegiate games across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The Okotoks Dawgs – winners of a three-peat of championships from 2022 to 2024 – will once again seek to have their names engraved on the Harry Hallis Memorial Trophy when the postseason wraps up in August.
Dawgs Academy is also hosting The Road to Okotoks, a Baseball Canada national championship featuring the top 16 amateur baseball programs from across the country. Taking place at the Seaman Stadium Complex from July 14-19, the top U19 academy will be crowned the winner of the inaugural Morneau Cup.
4. BASKETBALL
Local hoops fans can enjoy the Calgary Surge and their pursuit of a Canadian Elite Basketball League title. Their season got started in May and it runs until August. The Surge play their home games at the WinSport Event Centre.
5. SHOW JUMPING
Spruce Meadows plays host to a number of tournaments throughout the summer. The Continental runs from June 4-7, the National follows from June 10-14 and the Pan American completes the schedule that month with show jumping action from June 25-28. Canada Day kicks off the North American event, which takes place July 1-5. A pair of August Classic events are happening between Aug. 13-23, while the Masters takes place from Sept. 9-13 and the Harvest Classic goes from Sept. 23-27.
6. RODEO & CHUCKWAGON RACES
The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth – the Calgary Stampede – runs from July 3-12 and it offers up top-notch rodeo and chuckwagon action. The Stampede includes daytime rodeo events and Indigenous relay races. The Rangeland Derby features 10 nights of action with nine heats each evening and 27 chuckwagon drivers competing for prize money.
7. GOLF
The Rogers Charity Classic highlights the talents of PGA tour champions when top pro golfers from around the world converge on Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club from Aug. 19-23.
