About John
A native Calgarian, John taught at Viscount Bennett, Henry Wise Wood, Lord Beaverbrook and Ernest Manning high schools. The subjects he covered were physical education, english, social studies, health and music. He was also a department head of guidance and an assistant principal. While he has coached a variety of sports, his area of expertise became football, and for many years h e was a coach for the Calgary Colts and a timekeeper and scoreboard operator for over 30 years with the Calgary Stampeder Football Club.
John held the position of Secretary Treasurer of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association for 15 years from 1977 to 1993 and under his leadership and guidance it continued to be the envy of school districts across Canada. Under John’s leadership many city and provincial cross country championships were held in Calgary and always at the highest level, thanks to his organizational skills.
This outstanding educator, coach and administrator has been married to his wife Jean for over 45 years and they’re the proud parents of three sons, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren. As a Crescent Heights graduate, John has served the city and the CSHSAA well, and in 2001 was recognized as the Calgary Booster Club’s Sportsperson of the Year. This award is named in his hounour.

Starting in the 2016/17 school year, the scholarship awards program was revised, and each award was assigned to a specific school; to be awarded at the school, based on criteria set by the school. Additional scholarship awards were created at this time, so that all CSHSAA member schools had an award assigned to them to award to their students.
