Joane Cardinal Schubert

- Joe Massey Award -

About Joe

Joe left Ireland as a young man with a new wife and hopes of continuing his teaching career in Canada. His degree wasn’t fully recognized in Canada, so he took up a new career as a Real Estate Appraiser. This led him to starting his own company and a very successful business until he retired in 2007. Joe has been active for over 40 years with rugby in Calgary and has coached and held executive positions with the Saints Rugby Club and the Calgary Rugby Union, and has been a provincial representative on many committees. He has also been a rugby first division official since 1975 and is admired by all for his fairness, his integrity and his keen knowledge of the game. Joe was an active referee adjudicator and is called upon on a regular basis for his opinion and observations involving rugby. He has coached high school rugby at Henry Wise Wood for over 30 years, even though his children graduated from there many years ago. His daughter Anita has coached field hockey at Henry Wise wood for several years and has been a very successful coach with both the junior and senior teams. In summary, Joe is an outstanding volunteer who is committed to the sport of rugby. He is also a very talented Barbershop singer with the Western Hospitality Choir in Calgary. We are honoured to have this award named after a most deserving coach.

Honoured Recipients

Starting in the 2016/17 school year, the scholarship awards program was revised, and each award was assigned to a specific school; to be awarded at the school, based on criteria set by the school. Additional scholarship awards were created at this time, so that all CSHSAA member schools had an award assigned to them to award to their students.
