Lord Beaverbrook

- Laurie Robertson Memorial Award -

About Laurie

Laurie was a physical education teacher and coach at Western Canada High School in the 1950’s and 60’s. He was a tremendous gentleman who was well liked by his students, athletes and fellow staff members. While teaching physical education and coaching football, basketball and track & field, Laurie made his mark and left a most positive impression on everyone he came into contact with. He transferred to Lord Beaverbrook High School in 1966 as an Assistant Principal and coach. Unfortunately, he became ill with cancer and passed away in 1968, leaving behind a wife and two children. As a tribute to Laurie, this award was established by the CSHSAA and named after him. It was presented for the first time at the City Basketball Championships at Bishop Grandin in March of 1969. Lauries’ wife and two children presented the trophy to the first winner, Dave Hellard of Central Memorial High School. This is the second oldest award given out by the Calgary Booster Club and the CSHSAA partnership.

Honoured Recipients

Starting in the 2016/17 school year, the scholarship awards program was revised, and each award was assigned to a specific school; to be awarded at the school, based on criteria set by the school. Additional scholarship awards were created at this time, so that all CSHSAA member schools had an award assigned to them to award to their students.
