Emerson Joy from St. Mary’s High School is the 2024 John Mayell Memorial Award Winner.
One of the coaches of this year’s winner says he has witnessed his outstanding athletic ability, unwavering commitment to academic excellence and exemplary qualities of good citizenship in everything he does. He participated in Football, Basketball, Track & Field and Golf and made a positive impact while giving his best at all times. In grade 12 he was a City All Star in Basketball and a team captain. As a role model he demonstrates excellence and determination and a positive attitude as a team leader. He was also a willing volunteer for the Athletic Department and helped whenever needed, which often included cleaning up the main gym after an activity or organizing and putting away equipment.
While maintaining an 89% average through three years of high school, he still found time to participate in many school activities. He was a Peer Tutor, Open House presenter, Tour Guide, Fund Raiser, helped coach the Junior Football team, was a member of the Fine Arts Club while promoting their annual concert and organized a Cheer Squad to support the many other school teams at their games.
In the Community, he was active in his Church while volunteering to work in the Church store, was a Fund Raiser for Cerebral Palsy, was a member and captain of the CBA Basketball team that won Nationals in Vancouver and was also an All Star. As a volunteer he helps a family with a special needs son, which includes driving him to his different programs, supervising him when needed and running errands to help the family out. He also helped an elderly man move and continues to help where ever needed in his Church. Our winner also found time to drive senior members of his community to and from their assorted physical activities.
Finally, this school year he was selected by the Calgary Booster Club as the Harry Hood Memorial Football Outstanding Player Award recipient for Division 3.
Please join me in recognizing the recipient of the John Mayell Memorial Award for the Outstanding Male Student Athlete for the 2023-2024 school year, from St. Mary’s High School Emerson Joy.
