High-end hoops are back in town, with the Calgary Surge set to take the court for their home opener.
The Surge – who opened the 2025 Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) season with an 86-84 Battle of Alberta win over the Edmonton Stingers – give Calgary fans their first taste of home hoops with a matchup against the Winnipeg Sea Bears at WinSport Event Centre at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 25th.
The 2023 Western Conference champs are in their third CEBL season and they have a roster that includes players with National Basketball Association (NBA), Canadian National Team and international experience.
Their season runs from May to August and consists of 12 home games and 12 away games.
The Battle of Alberta will shift to Red Deer for the CEBL’s first ever neutral site regular season game when the Stingers and Surge meet at Westerner Park Centrium on Thursday, June 19th.
Another matchup to circle on the calendar takes place on Wednesday, July 9th when the Surge welcome the Montreal Alliance to the Scotiabank Saddledome for the league’s first ever appearance at the Calgary Stampede.
“The Calgary Stampede is all about bringing people together through unforgettable experiences,” said Allison Wright, Director of Stampede Programming at the Calgary Stampede in a press release.
“What better way to do that than by introducing live professional basketball to Stampede Park – in a way that only the Stampede can deliver.”
That game will mark the Surge’s second trip to the Saddledome. In May of 2023, the largest single-game crowd in CEBL history saw 12,327 attend a Calgary Surge game at the ‘Dome.
“The Calgary Stampede is one of the most iconic celebrations in Canada, and it’s only fitting that CEBL basketball will become part of that energy and tradition,” says Mike Morreale, Commissioner and Co- Founder of the CEBL.
“Bringing the Surge to the Saddledome during the Stampede is another bold step by the organization’s leadership to grow the game and deepen its roots in the Calgary community. It will be a truly special night that fuses the spirit of sport and culture in a uniquely Albertan way.”
The Surge will visit the Saddledome for a third time on Sunday, Aug. 10th when the Niagara River Lions come to Calgary.
The CEBL is a 10-team professional basketball league that was founded in 2017. Each season finishes with a final four, single-elimination championship weekend tournament.
