Fans of the Calgary Flames will be crying Wolf for years.
And if his rookie season in the National Hockey League (NHL) is any indication, goaltender Dustin Wolf will keep those fans howling in delight in the seasons ahead.
The Flames announced on Sept. 9th that they had re-signed the netminder from California to a seven-year contract extension worth $52.5-million US. The deal means the 7th-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft will receive an annual average salary of $7.5 million. The extension begins in 2026 and runs through 2033.
The 6-foot tall, 170-pound goalie placed second in the Calder Memorial Trophy voting following the 2024-25 season, losing out on top rookie honours to Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson. Wolf had a 29-16-8 record, a .910 save percentage and a 2.64 goals-against average. He led all rookie goalkeepers in wins (29), saves (1,409) and shutouts (3).
“I’ve always used size and the draft pick selection and all that stuff as motivating factors,” Wolf said during a media availability.
“(The Flames) took another swing at giving me a chance to play a lot of hockey last year, and every time I step on that ice I want to prove them right.”
Ryan Huska, the head coach of the Flames, described Wolf as a true competitor.
“I think it’s great news for Dustin and his family, and I think it’s, selfishly for me, even better for our organization,” said Huska.
“We all know the type of goaltender he is, and I think we’re just going to see him get better and better for us along the way.”
General Manager Craig Conroy said the lengthy extension will provide stability between the pipes and send positive vibes throughout the hockey club.
“People want to be in Calgary and they believe we have a chance to win here,” said Conroy.
The Calgary Booster Club named Wolf the winner of the Scott-Mamini Memorial Award as the Male Athlete of the Year for his 2023 season. That year he was coming off back-to-back Goaltender of the Year awards in the American Hockey League (AHL) and he was also honoured as the league’s MVP.
